Director of Residential Life
The Director of Residential Life is the administrator of John Bapst’s boarding program, which enters its eighth year in 2018-19 and serves approximately 70 9th- through 12th-grade students on campus and in homestays. The residential program is an international and domestic boarding program, with the largest groups coming from China, Vietnam, and South Korea. This a position for an experienced educator. The Director reports to the Head of School, is a member of the Administrative Team, and works closely with many other administrators and staff.
The Director of Residential Life is responsible for the school’s delivery of a high-quality boarding experience that serves individual students and their families well and encourages prospective students to come to John Bapst. Day-to-day operations require energy, collaborative skills, and constant attention to detail, much of it recorded in the Director’s daily and weekend memos to staff and students, communicating duty responsibilities, activities, transportation needs, etc. The Director must live on campus, leading the houseparent staff by example. She or he must enjoy and have a talent for working with students, earning the trust of parents of a variety of international backgrounds, and garnering the trust and respect of colleagues at school.
The school year begins with an orientation program planned and managed by the Director, who, along with the International Program Director, has already has been in touch with families with information about the program. The Director works from an office at school and is also on the go between the school’s dorms, main building, and dining hall. He or she must be a people person—approachable, patient, and proactive. The capacity to forge positive relations with students and adults alike and a talent for problem-solving are essential. The Director regularly monitors the academic and social progress of boarding students. In addition to being a capable organizer, the Director must be approachable and patient, developing positive face-to-face relationships wherever possible.
Some combination of teaching, boarding school experience, and experience working with international students and/or living abroad is required. It is envisioned that the Director will teach one section of an academic discipline. A one- or two-bedroom dorm apartment is provided as part of the position (rent-free and utilities-free). The Director joins with other residential staff in doing afternoon, weeknight, and weekend duty on a rotating basis. Meals while school is in session are provided. The position is a twelve-month administrative position starting on July 1, 2018 (or as soon thereafter as is practicable) with on-campus residence required by August 1, 2018.

The school seeks an experienced, credentialed educator. Applicants should have a BA, at least five years experience (including some in a boarding school or international school environment), and a valid driver’s license. Applicants should be able to teach one or more sections of a high school subject. Applicants must truly enjoy working with teenagers and possess patience, flexibility, energy, skill in collaborating with other adults, attention to detail, and international experience of some kind, given that the majority of boarding students come from outside the USA. The capacity to forge positive relations with students and adults alike and a talent for face-to-face problem-solving are essential. On-campus housing is provided.
