The Department of Epidemiology, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (SPH), studies the frequency, distribution, and determinants of disease in humans, a fundamental science of public health. The Department at SPH and the Stanley Center at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seek a Senior Research Project Coordinator for their Neuropsychiatric Genetics in African Populations (NeuroGAP)-Psychosis Program. An independent, organized, and detailed-orientated team-player is sought for this position in Dr. Karestan Koenen's research group. This position is ideal for a candidate interested in a research career in population mental health.
NeuroGAP-Psychosis aims to collect saliva and phenotypic data from 35,000 individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (cases) and controls by the end of 2022. Samples will ultimately be sequenced for a GWAS analysis.

The incumbent will report directly to the Assistant Director, Research Operations for a study investigating the genetic underpinnings of schizophrenia and bipolar in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa. They will assist in the overall operational management of the study, ensure research teams are meeting the study milestones and timelines, and assist with quality control across the different sites. In collaboration with the site PIs and Harvard team, the Senior Research Project Coordinator will perform other related duties as assigned.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:- Manages two or more NeuroGAP-Psychosis recruitment sites, including site monitoring, site visits, site evaluation, fidelity to the study protocol, training African site teams, and capacity building.
- Manages the study sites' research activities for NeuroGAP-Psychosis, including in-country IRB tracking and submissions, procurement, and regulatory/compliance (such as auditing consent forms).
- Monitors data collection for quality, standardization, and assurance; cleans and organizes data, performs analytical reviews; programs study questionnaires in REDCap (research electronic data capture) or similar software; produces data reports.
- Serves as a liaison and the main contact between the study sites and the Harvard Research team.
- Under guidance from Assistant Director for Research Operations (ADRO), manages the development and maintenance of partnerships with international collaborators and research teams; serves as a liaison and the main contact between these groups and Harvard Research team, including site visits in East and South Africa, monitoring, training, and data reviewTravel to sites in Africa, which could include sites in Ethiopia, South Africa, Uganda and Kenya, to support implementation of the project and lead study teams there.
- Assist the ADRO with strategic planning and forecasting of research operations.
- Organize and coordinate weekly/monthly team meetings, both international and domestic, as well as prepare presentation of materials for meetings with NeuroGAP-Psychosis teams and the ethics collaborators. May participate in research presentations to key audiences at meetings, trainings, and briefings.
- Work in collaboration with the sponsored research team to compile data and resources needed for grant applications and maintenance. Draft, proofread, and submit technical reports and grant-related material or manuscripts.
- Other related duties as assigned.
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of June 30, 2022, with the possibility of extension.
PLEASE NOTE: 30% of this position requires travel to study sites in Africa, once allowable by Harvard Travel. Travel may include site visits to Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Africa.
PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the School and this role return to an operational status that supports it.
