The Manager of Research Operations (ROM) reports to the Director of Research Administration in the Department of Cell Biology and manages all aspects of departmental research operations to enable laboratory research. The ROM is responsible for supporting departmental operations related to safety, building management and infrastructure, research equipment, space planning and renovations, custodial services, security, IT, and telecommunications. This position is the primary liaison on behalf of the department to relevant internal and external groups supporting these efforts.
The ROM is the primary departmental safety officer, and oversees lab and departmental compliance with general EH&S policies, COVID-19-specific protocols, safety trainings, and certifications related to satellite accumulation area management, chemical and hazardous waste disposal, equipment disposal, controlled substance regulation compliance, and evacuation training. The ROM collaborates with facilities personnel, building managers, construction groups, and custodial services to oversee and maintain departmental space and infrastructure. Works with Space Planning to support Director of Research Administration in lab design and layout for both small and larger scale renovation projects. Assists with setting up, relocating, and closing down research labs. Works with laboratories, Facilties, and Engineering & Construction teams to schedule and coordinate maintenance and construction projects. Communicates effectively with department to provide regulatory and safety guidance, notice of facility shutdowns and upgrades, and additional trainings as needed. Works with Security to authorize and manage access to campus and departmental spaces. Works with Custodial Services and Shipping & Receiving for ad hoc needs. The ROM oversees shared equipment and resources, including troubleshooting of issues, coordinating service calls, maintaining service contracts, training lab personnel on usage, and relocating as needed. Partners with Director of Research Administration in the evaluation of new equipment needs, capital purchases, and use of shared space. Independently makes decisions on and negotiates expenditures related to repairs, service contracts, and equipment replacement. Ensures compliance with federal and University polices pertaining to the proper purchasing, management, transfer, sale, trade-in, and disposal of capital equipment. Strategically and proactively manages cost-effective procurement of scientific equipment and lab supplies on behalf of the department and individual labs, in conjunction with the Procurement Office. Performs inventory of capital equipment. Responsible for all internal and external federal audits and serves as the liaison between auditing groups and the department. Works closely with labs, departmental Finance Office, and other University groups to share and enact cost-effective practices or opportunities. Establishes and maintains contacts with sales' and manufacturers' representatives to research and negotiate new equipment on behalf of the department or labs. The ROM develops strong working relationships with lab managers, researchers, and administrative staff to ensure regulartory compliance and support research programs and initiatives. Manages personnel and space occupancy databases. Works with other ROMs across the School as needed, and represents the department at School-wide meetings (with other ROMS, EH&S, Facilities, COVID-19 Advisory Team). Organizes, sets agenda, and leads monthly meetings with departmental lab managers. Serves as the liaison between labs and glasswashing staff.
