Job Description:

Bemidji State University (BSU) invites applicants to join our team as a Relief Stationary Engineer.  The Relief Stationary Engineer relieves stationary engineers during approved absences and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the steam heating plant during relief shifts.

An offer of employment will be contingent upon a successful criminal background check conducted through the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a driving history background check, and a satisfactory physical assessment.

Responsibilities of the Relief Stationary Engineer include:

• Operating the water softening and testing equipment to guarantee peak efficiency is maintained. Percent of Time:  5%
• Assisting with other duties required of the Maintenance Department during normal and emergency hours when additional help is required. Percent of Time:  5%
• Performing preventative maintenance (lubricating, oiling) on operating and standby pumps, fans, HVAC and drainage systems. Percent of Time:  15%
• Overseeing and being responsible for the operation and maintenance of a high- and low-pressure steam heating plant on relief shifts. Percent of Time:  30%
• Repairing, maintaining, fabricating, and doing preventative maintenance on all heating plant systems and HVAC equipment, and maintaining records of maintenance and parts. Percent of Time:  30%
• Keeping the boiler tools, shop tools and shop area clean and in safe condition. Percent of Time:  5%
• Inspecting, repairing, and maintaining boilers, boiler equipment, and boiler room appurtenances as required. Percent of Time:  5%
• Maintaining records as instructed by the Chief Engineer and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Percent of Time:  5%

Required Qualifications:

• Current First Class B Grade Engineers license.
• Valid Class D driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with high-pressure gas and oil-fired steam boilers.
• Experience operating and maintaining a steam heating plant.
• Skills and experience working with maintenance tools, control systems, welding equipment, and HVAC systems.
• Experience reading sketches and taking oral and written instructions.
• A knowledge of, an interest in, or ability and experience working with diverse cultures and populations.
