China's population is aging rapidly. To meet the changing needs and demands of the aging population and their families, China is embarking on major reforms to transform its health care system and to build an elderly care system. Rigorous research and training are needed to inform policy formulations. At the same time, while the COVID-19 outbreak demonstrated China's substantial progress in medical science since the 2003 SARS outbreak, the catastrophic costs of COVID-19 in terms of both lives lost and economic, social, and psychological well-being placed in jeopardy, expose both the strengths and fundamental inadequacies of China's health care system and associated public health and policy research capacity.
The Harvard China Health Partnership seeks to hire a Research Assistant (RA) to conduct key analyses on comparative elderly care policy and COVID-19 response, in order to support our research agenda that promotes a sustainable and people-centered health and elderly care system in China that provides affordable, equitable, and high-quality care and security to everyone.
Under the direction of Professor Winnie Yip, the Harvard China Health Partnership is a vibrant research community with team members based in Boston and China. The partnership is housed within the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
The successful candidate will be dynamic, proactive, creative, and will bring stellar scholarship and analytical skills to the position. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:- Analyze responses of the United States, China, and other selected countries to COVID-19 and compare their effectiveness, to identify lessons that would help China and advanced nations to more effectively prepare for and respond to future disease outbreaks. This will be done through reviewing, analyzing and synthesizing published literature and policy documents
- Create a database to support assessment of the needs of aging populations in China, taking an inter-disciplinary perspective incorporating physical, social, emotional and overall well-being
- Conduct comparative analyses of elderly care systems across a number of countries relevant to China. This includes conducting quantitative analyses as well as creating and drafting research papers, manuscripts, articles or other documents for publication and/or presentation. The RA may present key research findings to internal audiences as well
- Facilitate communication with research partners at other locations or institutions as needed to support the above goals
- Other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term end date of one year from date of hire, with the possibility for extension.
PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually - including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the School and this role return to an operational status that supports it.
