Job Summary
The IACUC Administrator serves as a congruence and compliance reviewer for the Standing Committee on the Use of Animals in Research and Teaching and the Institutional Animal Care &Use Committee (IACUC) for the University. Works with investigators, IACUC staff, the Office of Animal Resources, and other University offices to provide assurance of IACUC approvals to sponsors, investigate and resolve issues of noncompliance, assist the research staff in maintaining adherence to IACUC-approved protocols with respect to University policy and federal regulations.
Position Description
- Perform administrative pre-review of protocol applications, facilitate the veterinary review process, and provide feedback to the researcher to ensure protocols are approved in a timely manner.
- Field/handle front-line reports of instances of noncompliance; investigate, track, categorize, and follow non-compliance instances to resolution, including deciding regarding reporting requirements.
- Perform grant-to-protocol congruence review and assist researchers in updating their protocols to ensure congruence.
- Counsel and advise researchers, students, and staff on matters related to regulations regarding the care and use of vertebrate animals in research and teaching as needed
- Assist with the development of education/orientation and quality improvement programs regarding the use of animals in research and teaching for departments and schools.
- Attending IACUC meetings and taking IACUC meeting minutes as needed.
- Perform semi-annual facility/use area inspections, develop reports, and perform follow-up steps as required, including post-approval monitoring.
- Serve as a University expert for user inquiries and provide formal training to researchers and staff on the eProtocol system
- Backup support for duties of the IACUC Administration staff.
- Develop reports of animal use related to annual reporting requirements and assurance/license/ registration/ accreditation renewal and maintenance from oversight bodies(USDA, PHS/OLAW, AAALAC, and City of Cambridge).
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Three or more years of experience working in IACUC administration
- CPIA certification or eligible for certification. If eligible, must take CPIA exam within 18 months of start date.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and local regulations regarding the care and use of animals in research.
- Familiarity with electronic protocol review/management systems and grants management systems is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to take initiative, work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work well under deadlines.
- Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, with demonstrated ability to organize, write about and discuss regulatory and complex issues clearly.
- Ability to work closely with the veterinary and animal care staff to resolve issues of noncompliance.
- Ability to communicate with a highly diverse group of people, with sensitivity to cultural differences.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion.
Certificates and Licenses
CPIA certification or eligible for certification. If eligible, must take CPIA exam within 18 months of start date.

- Work is performed in office, laboratory, and vivarium settings.
- This position is eligible for flexible work arrangements as business needs allow and in consultation with hiring manager.
