Under the general direction of the Chief Business and Operations Officer, directs the operation of the school bus system; in charge of the assignment, scheduling, maintenance and operation of school automotive equipment; and to do related work as required.
The work of the Transportation Director is performed with minimal supervision and considerable latitude for independent judgment overseeing and supervising the school district’s transportation system including any contracts with other districts for the same services. He/She also is responsible for assignments in other areas as determined by the Superintendent. This is a senior management position.
Examples of Duties:
Creates and periodically revises bus schedules and routes according to traffic hazards and fluctuations in numbers of passengers in various areas.
Determines the number of buses necessary for each fiscal year through consultation with school administrators and requests purchase of additional vehicles.
Schedules, allots time and assigns driver personnel for all automotive hauling within the school district.
Sets up preventative periodic maintenance schedules to keep all district vehicles in compliance with safety requirements.
Schedules and routes buses for extracurricular events.
Trains, instructs, supervises and evaluates bus drivers and trainer.
May personally drive buses in event of sickness or emergency.
Confers with school authorities on disciplinary problems of student passengers.
Maintains accurate records and submits reports.
Maintains communication equipment for buses and central dispatch.
Prepares purchase requisitions and orders.
Creates and maintains a positive public relations program within the district and community.
Provides transportation services for students in the most effective and economical way possible.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Training and Experience:
Five years as a bus driver and two years supervisorial experience with a transportation department. Multiple use of computers preferred. High School diploma or the equivalent required. A BA is desired.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of bus safety, vehicle maintenance, bus driver training, scheduling, organization theory, effective communication and problem solving techniques.
Abilities:
Ability to lay out, perform, or supervise helpers in performing mechanical maintenance; make time, material and cost estimates, make necessary purchases of parts and equipment; evaluate, plan and schedule work; keep records and prepare reports; organize, supervise and train helpers and bus drivers and supervise and work cooperatively with people.
Ability to organize and prioritize work, adjust to changing circumstances, act decisively and accept responsibility for decisions; work well with people, actively listens and possess good communication skills.
Physical Effort/Working Environment:
Light physical effort; occasional standing or walking; periodic handling of light weight parcels or supplies. Indoor and outdoor work environment. A pre-placement physical examination will be required.
Licenses and Certifications:
A valid Class A or B California Commercial Driver’s License is preferred. A School Bus and School Bus Driver Instructor Certificate issued by the State Department of Education is also preferred. Must have valid First Aid and CPR cards. Certification of completion verifying participation of the CDE School Transportation Administrators recommended.
Evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations may be required.
