DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWThe Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, located in the Coastal Biology Building on the Coastal Science Campus, is a dynamic group comprised of instructional and research units and a variety of support programs and facilities with staff committed to providing excellent service to students, faculty, and researchers. The department consists of 23 faculty, 14 adjunct professors, 1 continuing lecturer, and many lecturers, postdocs, researchers, and other administrative and technical support staff. Departmental resources for operations and research are among the highest in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. The department has approximately 900 declared and proposed undergraduate students in four distinct programs and 90 graduate students working towards Ph.D. and Master's degrees. The department offers a significant number of courses (160 laboratory, seminar, and lecture courses with at least 200 secondary sections), many in support of other majors, serving as many as 11,000 enrollments each year. The department is closely aligned with the research and faculty in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, Environmental Studies, and Ocean Sciences as well as outside agencies NOAA, NMFS, MBARI, California Academy of Sciences, and others.

https://www.eeb.ucsc.edu/ JOB SUMMARYUnder the direction of the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Department Manager, the Undergraduate Research and Field Safety Coordinator, independently performs a wide variety of student service-related issues and administrative functions to promote and coordinate research opportunities for EEB undergraduate students. EEB undergraduate research programs focus on impactful mentorship and offer field, lab, and inquiry-based research opportunities that include internships, work-study positions, and opportunities to present within and beyond the department. This position is responsible for but is not limited to, undergraduate research program safety planning, outreach, and student advising and mentoring. Additional duties include field and research course enrollment support, departmental research award and scholarship administration, undergraduate research workshops and event planning, and undergraduate research program evaluation and assessment. The incumbent works with moderate supervision and communicates with staff and faculty and graduate students across the department and with campus partners to ensure safety and compliance, maintain and support research programs and make recommendations to improve student experiences.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONSalary Information: Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES25% - Research Opportunities and Awards Coordination
- General administration of all functional areas of the CAMINO program including ongoing research of funding opportunities, assessing and managing annual budget for stipends/awards, overseeing the equitable outreach, and selection process.
- Coordinate and administer research opportunities for undergraduates. Examples include but are not limited to independent study, workstudy, field courses, volunteer internship and course opportunities.
- Promote undergraduate and graduate student award opportunities, coordinate annual award call, and administer applicant review and award distribution for department awards.
25% - Student Advising & Mentoring
- Serve as primary contact for students seeking research & internship opportunities.
- Assess academic interests, career goals, and suggest appropriate opportunities.
- Assist students in preparing for on and off-campus learning experiences.
- Assist with student and alumni support, including post-graduate professional planning.
- Promote field research programs and courses such as the CAMINO, BIOE 82, BIOE 20F & field quarter opportunities.
- Advise students on course curriculum and how research fits into the undergraduate majors.
15% - Undergraduate Research Outreach & Events
- Prepare announcements and promotional materials to advertise internship and field study opportunities to students and faculty. Produce copy for student handbook, UCSC General Catalog, and other written and electronic publications, including social media, website updates, and class visits.
- Develop and make presentations to students, staff, and faculty at orientation and advising events. Participate in outreach and pipeline activities including but not limited to UCSC programs: STEM Diversity, ACE, UC LEADS, CAMP.
- Develop and maintain contact with other campus internship coordinators to share information, develop joint initiatives where appropriate, reduce duplication of effort, and collaborate to provide good service to students and faculty.
- Maintain connections with alumni of research experiences.
- Communicate about programs with potential donors.
10% - Student Service & Administrative Support
- Manage budgets and expenses; analyze program financial needs.
- Work closely with the UCSC financial aid and business offices.
- Process student and mentor payments, reimbursements, awards.
- Create a database of student participants, projects, and subsequent activities.
- Collect participant and provider data, develop and maintain a database of research internships.
- Design and produce reports from database.
- Analyze reports and modify the program to ensure that students meet research/internship requirements and agreements.
- Update and maintain website for the research programs.
20% - Field Safety Administrative Coordination
- Provide department administrative support to faculty for all field course safety compliance per EH&S campus protocol.
- Serve as the primary liaison between EH&S and EEB faculty to understand and communicate policies and procedures to ensure that all quarterly safety plans are filed and implemented prior to undergraduate student field experiences.
- Coordinate safety needs with the Biology Lab Prep team to ensure successful field course outcomes.
- Facilitate TA training to prepare for overall field course safety, which includes safety guidelines for use of EEB vehicle fleet used for undergraduate student transportation to/from field sites.
5% - Special Projects
- Research funding opportunities to support field internships and courses and assist faculty with grant writing and reporting on activities and outcomes for funders.
- Coordinate UCSC Giving Day projects.
- Perform other duties and projects at the same level of complexity, difficulty, and responsibility as assigned.
- Maintain procedures manual for major functional areas of the job.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree in related area plus two years of relevant experience or equivalent training related to the following skills and background.
- Experience leading or planning professional development or career based workshops; mentor students as they apply to jobs and programs.
- Experience in academic advising/counseling in an institution of higher education; knowledge of and experience working with ethnic minority, low-income, non-traditional, or other under-served student populations in an educational setting to support academic success.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain a high level of professionalism in all circumstances.
- Ability to understand, develop and present budgetary and financial information.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to make presentations to both small and large audiences.
- Ability to effectively communicate complex concepts and materials in oral and written formats to students, staff, faculty and the general public.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills sufficient to independently set priorities and maintain a professional manner within a complex and fast-paced environment with competing needs and requiring attention to detail.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training plus two years of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of or experience working on research, teaching or practice in ecology, evolutionary biology or a related field.
- Experience in advising diverse students interested in ecology, evolutionary biology, plant and marine sciences, conservation biology, or related fields.
- Knowledge of University policies, rules, processes and procedures relevant to key responsibilities of this position; or similar experience from another large institutional setting.
- Experience organizing and implementing student, professional development, speaker, or related events.
- Knowledge of field course safety needs and or personal field experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
